VARIOUS PROSECUTIONS AND
ARRESTS

Auckland, March 7
At the Police Court to-day 48 young men were charged with having failed'iio render personal sorvice tuidfer part 6 of the Defence Act, ISOO. A good maiiy-r.ames were not answered to, several liasin^ been pronounced medically unfit for seiV'.'COMost of the accused pleaded guilty, and offered no objection to the decision of the Court. Fines of £2 and 7s* costs were- imposed in some cases. Others showed good cause- for..\ixemptioiij and the excuses were given attention to. Others wore' lot .off on paying costs. Several stated that they would not pay the fine.
Christchurcft, March 7
There were two further arrests today for failure to pay fines infiietrd for breaches of the Defence Act. Edward Henry Edwards, and Walter James Hooper, who failed to pay a fino and costs amounting to £2 10s, were taken |to Lyttolton to work out an.alternative of twenty-one days' imprisonment. ■ i!
It is understood that warrants are out for the arrest of five others who have broken the Act, and failed to submit to -the penalties inflicted by the Magistrate. . '
