ENFORCING THE DEFENCE ACT.

VARIOUS PROSECUTIONS AND

ARRESTS

Auckland, March 7

At the Police Court to-day 48 young men were charged with having failed'iio render personal sorvice tuidfer part 6 of the Defence Act, ISOO. Fines of £2 and 7s* costs were- imposed in some cases. Others showed good cause- for..\ixemptioiij and the excuses were given attention to. Others wore' lot .off on paying costs. Several stated that they would not pay the fine.

There were two further arrests today for failure to pay fines infiietrd for breaches of the Defence Act. Edward Henry Edwards, and Walter James Hooper, who failed to pay a fino and costs amounting to £2 10s, were taken |to Lyttolton to work out an.alternative of twenty-one days' imprisonment. ■ i!

It is understood that warrants are out for the arrest of five others who have broken the Act, and failed to submit to -the penalties inflicted by the Magistrate. . '
