EDUCATION BOARD.

The Education Board resumed its sitting yesterday morning at ten o'clock, 'when there were present: Messrs. Franldyir (chairman), Laston, Lock, Muuson, Fair, Shepherd, Beuke, Smith and Maginnity. The Inspector's annual report was submitted by Chief Inspector Harkness. It was resolved, ou the motion oif Mr. Smith, seconded by Mr. Beuke that the report bo put in typo, and that a copy be supplied to each member, and the discussion on the report be taken at the iu>xt\ meeting of the Board.

Amy Tuckey, of Westport District High school, was recommended to the College governors for the scholarship awarded annually to pupils of the District High schools.

As Donald H. Black, of Stoke, a winner of one of the Junior Board Scholarships, docs-not desire to leave homo, it was recommended that tho scholarship he awarded\ to Ernest Foot, of Denniston, with\4S7 marks. It was resolved on the motion of Mr. Smith, seconded by Mr. Lock, that the recommendations of the inspectors regarding the awarding ol! the scholarships be agreed to. Tlie- report of tho inspectors on tho secondary classes of the high schools was road, and it was noted that geography was a very weak subject with the pupilx. It uas resolved to sou;! a copy of the report to the head teachers.

The result of the first examination of pupil teacher* was read. Miss Constance- Rouudy, of Motueka District High School, passed. The transfer of •>. teacher to Waihuta school was agreed to, and Miss Gannon wa,s appointed. Mrs. Seaddeu wr.s appointed n = teacher of the household school »t Oxiekaka.

A letter from Archdeacon Grace i" the Whangarae school was received, the inspector to report to the Boari after his next visit to the school.

It was resolved to inform applicants for a school at Owen Junctio.i of the conditions for granting ,i household school.

Miss Eden, of Wakefield, wa* granted two months' sick leave,, without pay. Miss Clayton, of R-eefton. was granted seven days' leave, without pa)-.

Tho Commissioner of Crown Lands was thanked for his letter re education reserves at- Reofton.

Regarding an application for tho transfer of the lease o<: a section at Murchison, it was resolved that consideration of the application be deferred until the rent is paid. Regarding a proposed .scparato M'hool at Taliuua, it was refolded, on the motion of Mr. Mnginsiit.v, seconded by Mr. Lock that'tis tho question of increasing tho present school accommodation will h;ivn to occupy the attention of the !':>;;r.! on ;i i early date, the Board w'll then consider the question of making Tahun i a separate school.

A long and somewhat warm diseus-f-ion ensued upon the recommendation of the Technical Committee that m. sum standing against the tochnic;:l account should lit; transferred to tin Board's genera.l building account. The sum was incurred in building the. Westport Tt'clmic.il. School. It was contended tho dcht was incurro.l before the existence of the Technical Committee. The recommendation was agreed to, Messrs. Maginnity, Fair, Eastou and Shepherd voting against it. Subsequently. Mr. ' Maginnity gave notice to move: ''That the question of making a transfer from the technical account to the gener.-tl building account bo first submitted to the comptroller and Auditor-Genera!." On the motion of Mr. Munson, secoded by Mr. Smith, that the February meeting of the Board be held at Reofton and Westport, Mr. Magininty objected on the score of expense. Tho motion was carried. iSubsoqucntJy Mr. Maginnity gave notice to move to rescind the resolution respecting holding a meeting on the West Coa.st! The following appointments were agreed to:—Miss Hewlett to be second assistant at Richmond school; Miss Harney to be assistant at RockviJlo; Miss Watson to b (; pole teacher at Gordon.

The following resignations wore accepted:—Miss XL Anderson, Matakitaki; Miss A. Ikttiemr.mi, Weiiniston; Miss H. Vaughan, Warwick Juncti-w ; Miss M. 'J. Rasmuss<v.. Lyell; Miss E. Dwyer, East Takaka; Mr. J. Goodyer, Longford; Miss L. Lammas, Wai-iti; Miss M. G. Robson, Okiwi; and Mr. E. Edridge, Waiiti, retiring on superannuation. A resolution was passed on +hr motion of Mr. Maginnity, seconded by Mr. Smith, regretting the retirement of Miss Roberts from the Board's office staff, and recognising her faithful dischargo of all duties entrusted to her.

The inspectors recommended the following appointments of pupil teachers, which were agreed to:—Nelson Boys', Miss F. Moore: Richmond, Miss Vora Smith; Westport Miss Mabel Fletcher and Miss Carriek. The following probationers were appointed:—Miss M. Doyle (Westport), J. W. Norris and Charlotte Hunter (Reofton); Miss Tern a R-oughton (Nelson Boys'); James Risk (Denniston). Miss Myra Hounsell was transferred from Riwaka to Nelson Boys' School.
