RETIREMENT OF BISHOP MULES (From "The Colonist. Jan. 12.) We are informed by tlie Bishop ol Nelson that he has sent to the Bishor of Christchurch, the Acting-Primate notice of his desire to resign the Set of Nelson, and to retire from the duties of tho office from June 30tl; CThe .Right Rev. Charles 0. Mules. M.A., D.D.j was consecrated Bishor. of Nelson, on February 24th, 1892, in succession to the late .Bishop Suter to whom he had been chaplain from 1869 until that year. Bishop Mules was born at llminster, Somersetshirts, on September ~Bth, 1837, beinjj tho s»n of tho Rev. J. H. Mu>;, Vicar of llminster. He wag educated :>t llminster Grammar School and Cheltenham College, proceed!;: thi'ncp to Trinity College, Cambridge, where he took the degree ol Master of Arts in 1863. He was ordained to the deacon ate at Durham in 18b''!, receiving full orders in the following year. For a short time he wrs curate i>t Whorlton, Durham, and afterwards at Stradbroke. Suffolk. In 18G3 tho Rev. C. 0, Mules came to New Zeal' Mid, »nd was appointed vicar of Brightwater with Waimea West. In 1885 he became Archdeacon of Waimea, retaining that office until on the death of Bishop Suter he was raised to'episcopal dignity. The consecration of Bishop Mules took place at St. Paul's Pro-Cathedra:, Wellington, en February 24th, 1801 the officiating prelates being the Bishops, of Wellington (Primate-), Auckland, Dunedin, Waiapu, and Christchurch. In 1908 Bishop Mules attended the Lambeth Conference and the Pan-Anglican Congress. It is probable that the selection of Dr. Mules' successor will be macfc at an early dote. In accordance with the procedure in .such, cases, the Act-ing-Primate (Bishop Julius) will submit thp resignation of Bishop Muleb to tho other Bishops in New Zealand, and upon their assent, or that of a majority of them, te its acceptance being signified, it will take effect as from the date specified in the., resignation, or such other date as the Bishops may fix. The Acting-Primate will then direct the Bishop's Commissar? (the Rev. J. P. Kempthorno) to convene an extraordinary session of the Nelson Diocesan Synod to take into consideration the election of a Bishop of tho diocese.
