IMPORTANT LAND SALE.

THE "PAKOWHAI" ESTATE. Tiio keen <.loin;uul existing for firstflass land in small areas was evidenced by the exceptionally large number of buyers who attended the sale at Hastings on the 10th inst. of the subdivision of the "Pakowhai1" estate. The sale was conducted at Hastings by Messrs. Dalgcty and Co., Limited, mid Mr. J. l\. Lanauze on behalf of the ownors, and before the advertised time of starting it- was peon tiiat buyers had come in large numbers from far and wide to embrace the opportunity of purchasing part of what is undoubtedly the finest land in the Dominion. Unfortunately the announcement mr.de in the local papers on the day of the sale by t-lio Hawke's Ray Rivers Board that they intended to take under the Public Works Act twelve of the sections, affecting -!jfi acres, considerably militated again: t the sale. Notwithstanding this, however, the fixture was without doubt the most largely attended land sale >et held in Flnwke's Hay, the seating accommodation of the King's Theatre, being taxed to its utmost. The owners defided to submit the whole of tho sections, and to indemnify purchasers against loss in the event of the .Rivers Board carrying out its intention. I'idding was spirited through-' out, and it was at once apparent that ■i particularly keen demand existed for first-class land in small areas. Tho total area of land submitted was 1020 acres, divided into 39 sections. Tho following sales were effected: — Lot 1, 68 acres, Fred. Howard, £32 10s per aero; lot 2, 20 acres, P. J.
