THE THIRD TEST MATCH.

ENGLAND TOTALS FIVE

CENTURIES

ll'nEBS Association—CorvaioiiT.] (Received Jan. 15, 10.10 p.m.) Adelaide, Jan 15. The third tost match was resumed in cool weather, and before an attondanco of 50' JO. The wicket was •still excellent. Cotter and Hordcrn bowled. The batsmen were ultra-cau-tious. They would not try forcing shots, and in half an hour notched only 15 singles. At hist Foster cut Cotter for two, and Mead drove him for 3, and 350 went up in 374 minutes. With tho scoro unaltered Hordern accepted an easy return from Moad, who batted 107 minutes. Douglas came next and Matthews replaced Cotter. Foster was in 06 minutes beforo 10 appeared for him. Douglas drove Matthews for 4, then the battingbecame more tedious than ever. Tho batsmen simply blocked the bowling. Hordern, after bowling 12 overs for 17 runs resigned to Kelloway, whom Foster late cut to the boundary. At the luncheon adjournment the scoro was 398, Foster 33 and Douglas 19. Cotter and Hordern bowled after luncheon, and 400 came up in 426 minutes. Even with a new ball the bowlers 'could, make no impression on the batsmen, who let the ball hit tho bat with patient stolidity. Minnett and Armstrong were then called on. Foster reached his 50 in 114 minutes. In Minnett's second over Douglas played on. The English Captain batted with unusual freedom, and was at the wicket only 75 minutes. Woolley was next, and then Foster opened out and hit Minnett for three fours in one over. Armstrong then bowled him. Foster generally hits, but to-day was most watchful, though when ho hit ho put a lot of wrist power into the strikes and placed cleverly. His innings occupied 134 minutes, and included sis fours. Woolley and Smith shaped well. Cotter and Hordovn were soon bowling again, but Smith punished Hordern's slows by jumping out to them. When Woolley was 16 lie slammed the ball back to Cotter with terrific force, and the bowler, who had followed up, was lucky to gave his head, leave- alone catch it. In Cotter's next over Woolley pulled a short ball into tho stumps. He took 40 minutes to make 28—8 for 492. With Barnes in Smith cracked seven off Hordern, completing the fifth century for 508 minutes. A run later Smith "skied Cotter, and was nicely caught at mid-on by the Englishman Vine, fielding for Trumper, whoso knee was injured while fielding. Hitch lifted the first ball to Macartney on the boundary. The innings lasted 514 ..minutes. Cotter bowled well, but Hordern, except for the first hour to-day, did not trouble the batsmen. The fielding was patchy. With !)5 minutes to bat Kelleway and Bardsley faced Foster and Barnes. Kelleway swung Foster to the leg boundary, and Bardsley cover hit Barnes for 4. The bowline was exceedingly accurate, and with the field close tho batsmen found runs hard to get. Snicks off either bowler yielded 7 to Kelleway, though the second was dangerously near Gunn in the slips. A double change of Douglas and Hparne was tried at 39. Twelve runs scored oft their first two overs brought up 50 in 56 minutes. Hearne's third over cost 12, mostly to Bardsley*. Kelloway snicked one luckily through the slips'. At 63 Hitch replaced Hearno, and 14 runs came from two overs, but in his second Bardsley at 40 was badly missed by Foster. Then Kelleway'played on to Douglas. He was batting '82 minutes—l for 80.
