NELSON EDUCATION BOARD.

MONTHLY MEETING

Tho monthly meeting of the Nelson Education Board commenced yesterday. Present: Messrs. W. N. Franklyn (chairman), W. Lock, G. B. Shepnerd, J. L. Munson, J. W. Fair, L. D. Eastern, A. T. Maginnity, J. D. Bouke, and F. AY. Smith. The treasurer's .statement showed the following balances, Cr. current account £1334 14s sd; book balances, cr general account £174 16s sd; cr. building account £1690; manual and technical account £825 Os 6d.

Arising out of the si-cretary's report it was resolved that pupil teachers and probationers whoso terms of service were expiring on 31st December, and who had signified their intention not to proceed to the training college bo requested to state their reasons tor their decision; that plans of additions to the Seddonvifle and Granity schools be obtained as soon as special grants have been provided. In forwarding the third instalment of £1005 of the building grant for 1911 the Department intimated that the total amount to be paid would bo £372!), being £500 larger than any previous year. A communication signed by representatives of twelve insurance companies doing business in Nelson was received, requesting the Board to reconsider its action in transferring the insurances on the Nelson city schools to the State Fire Office.—Resolved that the letter he acknowledged.

The Department notified that the application for a grant for additions to the Takaka District High School had been acceded to.—Resolved that plans for the additional room, also for a science room bo prepared, and ti-u----ders invited for the work.

Four tenders were received for tip erection of school buildings at Tui: W. E. Wilkes £269; H. O.sen, £230; E. Haase and Son £221; Chamberlain and Stanuard £196 6s 4d.—Resolved that the lowest tender be accepted. The Department wrote stating that they were unable to consent to the Board's application to abandon the teacher's residence at Stoke, and in lieu thereof to grant house allowance to the teacher.—lt was resolved that steps be taken to invite tenders for repairs and improvements to the residence.

The Board consented to an aßsigniiujit of lease of part of part section 1.066, Westport, from Kelly and Millett to J. T. Weekcs.

The Motueka Committee wrote in further roferenco to the proposal i<> re-build two rooms at the Motueka District High School. It was resolved to consider the letter on receipt of lh:> Department's 'reply to the Board's representations. Applications from committees were dealt with as follows: Brightwatcr, repairs £11 8s granted; Hampden street, Nelson, fencing, £9 10 granted ; Denniston, shelter shed, t"4 granted; Black's Point, fencing, committee referred to previous corn-s----poudeuce; Westport, repairs, e;;\, Messrs. Munson, Fair and Shepherd to report; Nelson, extra remuneration for Mian Shone, declined ; Nelson, . nlargoment Haven road school, referred to inspectors for report. Mr. Maginnity, by consent, withdrew the notices of motion standing in his name, referring to travelling expenses of members, and school cu;i:petitions, but intimated that he would bring the latter proposal before tli.' Board at a later date.

Mr. Bouko moved, according to :::>- ---tico, and it was resolved that tl:o Board subsidise all voluntary contributions collected by school committees for improvement a to school property by £ for £ up to £5 in any one year, provided tho improvements proposed are approved by the Board. Accounts amounting to £3529 wore passed for payment.
