SUCCESSFUL COOL STORING.

(From '!Tbe Colonist," June 29.)

By chance yesterday a" member of our staff happened upon Mr. Rowlands tho fruit packing expert brought from Tasmania by Messrs, E. Buxton and Co., busily engaged packing a considerable number of cases of apples that had been three months in the cool store at tho Nelson. Freezing .Works. The apples, Stunners, wore in as good a condition as the day they were placed in the store, indeed, they had all tho appearance, of being fresh picked. From the experience of last season and the present one there can be no doubt that Mr. J. Allan Mitchell and his assistants can be depended upon to show unvarying successful results. Our representative was much taken with Mr. Rowlands' methods of packing, both before placing in the cool store (when the apples are unwrapped) and when wrapping and packing for shipment.

The advantages of cool storage were strikingly shown by the experience of Mr Kurtzhals, of Stoke,- with regard to a quantity of Winter Colo pears from his orchard. At the time of the fruit being harvested tho ruling price was 3s to 3s Cd per half case. Mr Kurtzhals placed the fruit in the cool store at the Nelson freezing works on 29th March, over three months ago. He has just taken them out and received 10s 6d and 10s 9d per half case for tho whole lot, which wore in splendid order. The total cost of storage was Is per half case, .so the foresight of the orchardist gained him 150 per eont on the gross return if he had sold in March. This is the gentleman whe last year stored his apples and finally got 17s 6d a case for them .
