[United Press Assocutioh ] Wellington, May 14. The Hon. Roderick Mackenzie, the Minister for Public Works, delivered a speech at Taumarunui last night, and replying to the Opposition criticism Jig said the Government had three millions in the bank available for reproductive public works. Ho defended the succession duties, under which estates under £25,000 were exempt if left to a widow, a child, or a grandchild. The Government had recently transferred £800,000 of tho surplus to tho Public Work Department, and. thig would be available for nwepsary purposes of settlement. He denied that the Liberal Administration had increased taxation. The contrary was the case, ami the remissions of duties on tea, kprosene and otjiflj- articles of general use totalled to a very large sum.
