The Marlborough Racing Club's 25th cup meeting opened to-day in l\w weather. The course was in excellent order and there was a largo attendance, including the Governor. Tlx fields were larger than usual, and good finishes were witnessed. Tho totalisator investments amounted to £6,582, compared with £4,586 for the first day last year. Tho results were : — Maiden Hack: Long Tom 1, Glenfern 2, Inveran 3. Six other started. Won by two lengths. Ugbrooke Welter: First Consul 1, Aimwell 2, Bracken 3. Scratched: Beacon, Toanga, Ribstone Pippin, Wild Bird, and Succession. Won by half a length.
Opawa Welter: Negative 1, Astonishment 2, Icel 3. Scratched: Beacon and Daunton. Won by two length.
Marlborough Cup: Gunboat 1, Beacon 2, Directoiro 3. Equitas led past the stand, Beacon lying third. At the four furlong post, Beacon |w£nti to the front, and ten lengths from homo Gunboat came through, and the pair fought out the finish, Gunboat winning by half a length. Equitas, the favourite, finished in the ruck.
Autumn Hack: Ahuapai 1, Negative 2, Merrie Tuno 3. Also started : Daunton. The winner led nearly tho whole way, winning by a neck from Negative.
Flying Handicap: Glenspring I, Merrie Frank 2, Red Luppin 3. Also ran: Zealand, Wild Bird, Surmount, Irish Rifle, Tumut, and Splash. Tlio winner lead the whole way and won by a length.
Electric Hack: Undecided 1, Alluroment 2, Septimus 3. Also started: Merrie Goer, Glenrock, and Yeode!. Won by a length.
