A WELL KNOWN SETTLER SHOOTS HIMSELF.

News was received in town on Saturday morning that Mr J. P. Livingstone, a well known settler of Wakapuaka, had been found shot about a chain away from his house. It appears that after breakfast Mr Livingstone went out to groom his horse, and a few minutes afterwards his eldest daughter went out and found her father lying on the ground in a pool of blood, with a shot through the right temple, The deed was committed at about 8.20, and the unfortunate man lingered until 10 minutes to 10. Decoased, who leaves a widow and three children, was 46 years of age, and had lived at Wakapuaka for some yearspast. He recently purchased a fanr at Lower Hutt, and was naoking up on Friday last in preparation for departure, The deceased had not enjoyed good health, but there had been nothing in his manner to indicate that he contemplated taking his life. Deceased was a member of the Nelson Defence Rifle Club, and took keen interest in shooting matters.

An inquest was JieW by Mr J. S. Evans, S.M., Coroner, at Wakapuaka. yesterday afternoon. Evidence was given by Mrs Livingstone, Miss Ann Livingstone, Dr Johnston, Arthu'i East (a neighbour), and Detectm Townseud, and the Coroner returned r verdict that death resulted from tin e.'fects of a revolver shot self inflicted, and that there was nothing to indicate the state of deceased's mind.
