NEW COUNCIL AND THE MAYORELECT.

AN AMICABLE SPIRIT.

The Mayor-elect (Mr. T. A. H. Field) received his first deputation since his election to the office of chief magistrate of the city, yesterday. It was composed of tho newly elected City Councillors, referred to by Cr. Field and his supporters during the election campaign as the "happy family." Crs. Harley, Mercer, Snodgrass Hampson, Fell and Tasker were present, and an apology for absence was received from Cr. Bisley, who was prevented from being present by urgent private business.

Cr. Harley (who headed the poll) was spokesman, and on behalf of the deputation, congratulated Cr. Field on his election. Now that the fight was over, he said, and Cr. Field had been elected, they were quite satisfied to recognise him as the leader of the Council. He hoped that there would not bo a continuance of party spirit and that they would all work amicably together in the best interests of the city. His was sure that under Cr Field's leadership they would get on perfectly well together. Cr. Mercer endorsed Cr. Harley's remarks, and said that personally he would be only too pleased to help Mr Field in every possible way. Crs. SnodgrasSj Tasker, Fell, and Hampson expressed similar sentiments. The last named expressed the opinion that the coming year would be the best year Nelson had had for some time.

Mr. Field thanked the deputation for the spirit of good-will that had prompted them in waiting upon him, which he heartily reciprocated. The fight, although ..a hard one, had been the cleanest fought for many years, and no ill-feeling was left. Mr. Field said that in his opinion, the electors had selected a very excellent Council.

Tlie deputation, having shaken hands individually with Cr Field, then withdrew.
