NELSON AND DISTRICT RETURNS

?.Ir.' G. CV Gilbert, Oiilef Census Enumerator for Nelson, furnishes the appended returns for Waimea County, Nelson Borough, Richmond Borough, and Motueka Borough :—

Waimea County 18,653 Nelson Borough 8,096 Richmond Borough 703 Motueka Borough 1,229

At the census of 1906, the population of Nelson was 8164, on ship board 59 ; Richmond 651; Motucka 1068, on shipboard 2; Waimea County, 7,785; At the first glance it would appear that tho population of the Waimea County had increased by 10,868, but this is not so, because, for the purpose of the census, the population of tho boroughs in tho Waimea County are included in the population of the county. Thus, if the totals of Nelson, Richmond and Motueka, amounting to 10,028, were deducted from 18,653, the population of the county (including tho boroughs) it would leave 8,625, which is the population of tho Waimea County proper, an increase of 840 since last census.
