Mr Paul A. F. Birch, one time Registrar of the Supreme Court, at Napier, died at South Yarra, Melbourne, on March Ist.

Mr. A. L. Muir, editor, and one of the proprietary of tho "Poverty Bay Herald," Gisbornc, is paying a short visit to Nelson. Mr. Muir's sons are pupils at the College.

Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Brown, accompanied by Miss C. Haklano leave Nelson this morning for Sydney en route for England.

Dr. Washbourn, who has been appointed resident surgeon at the Nelson hospital, took up his duties yesterday.

Mr Frank Morton has accepted an invitation to act as judge at the forthcoming competitions of the Waikato Musical and Elocutionary Society.

The death occurred at Wellington on Thursday of Mr Henry Smith, at the ago of 74 years. Deccmsed enlisted in the 12th. Lancers in 1855, and was on active service in India, receiving his discharge in 1861. He resided in Wellington for 37 years, and leaves a widow and family of six sons and three daughters.
