ADDINGTON STOCK SALE.

[United Press Association.]

Christchurch, March 8

At Addington there were large entries «!' stock and a- good attendance. l (1at cattle made a recovery in prices to the extent of about 2s per 1001b. Store sheep and fat lambs were much easier Kat wethers sold at about the same as last week but fat owes were down .•.bout Is per head. There was a better demand for store cattle, and pigs were .lull of sale. Store sheep again formed a very heavy jeanlinu, ami included a considerable* number that had arrived by sea, these latter being of

mixed ages and mostly in low condition. The scarcity of feed affected the demand, especially i"r sheep in low condition, 'i her? was only a small proportion of wethers offered, and they sold up to hite rate:;. Good locally bred owes and the !>L<st of the ovwsoa ewes sold very well, but inferior sorts were easier. Lambs, both local.and those from :i distance, were weaker in price. Two-tooth ewes made 12s 6d to 13s 6d, good fourtooth 16s Id, sound mouth fives Us to Us Gel, oversea two-tooth ewes Us to 12s, four and six-tooth 11s to 12s 6d, mixed sound mouth lines 8s to 10s, others 6s 6d to 7s Yd, and aged and culls 2s to 5s Gd, forward wethers 12s Cd to 13s lid, medium 11s to 12s, others 9s to 10s Cd, small and inferior halfbreds 7s Id upwards, best rate lambs 10s 7d, otliei.s 8s Gd to 9s 4d, medium 0s 6d to Bs, .small and low conditioned sorts 6s to 6s Gd, culls 3s 6d to 4s 6d, station half-bred wether lambs 6s 4d to 8s -id, ewe lambs to 11s.

The yarding of fat lambs showed an increase on the* previous week, and a very large proportion were not well finished, many lots being only in a forward store condition. The export buyers wore operating as well as a couple of speculators. The prices were, however, deeidwlly easier, the decline ranging from Gd to (Jd, and in some cases up-to Is per head. The export buyers were, operating on the basis of 4id up to 42!bs, and -IJd for ovoir and second quality. There was a decline of Is to Is 3d per head, tegs making 15s to 16s, and ordinary weights 10s 3d to 14s lOd. Out of the 141 lots bought by exporters 66 were sold under 13s, 55 under lls, and 20 at 14s and over. Butchers' lots made 11s 3d to 15s 3d, and passed in lots at 11s lOd to 13s lOcl. Some of thci passed in lots were afterwards purchased by exporters for less money than was bid at auction, and others were sent to the factory on owner's account. There was a fairly larga yarding of fat sheep, the bulk being ewes. There was a poor selection of wethers, comparatively few lots being well finished, but they sold quite up to last week's prices. Ewes, on the other hand, were decidedly easier, especially the aged and badly conditioned sorts, the decline being fully Is per head as compared with the previous week. The range of prices was:—Prime wethers 16s to 18s, lighter 12s to 15s 6d, prime ewes 13s to 15s 9d, medium 10s to 12s 6d, aged and light 7s to 9s 6d, merino wethers 10s Id.

There were only 242 head oi' fat cattle penned, or 98 Ires than the previous week. The quality was uneven, but in view of the short supply there was a more active competition, and values improved to the extent of about 2s per lOOlbs. Steers made £6 15s to £10 10s, and extra to £12 5r,, heifers £5 los to £9 ss, and cows £5 to £11 7s 6d, equal to 27s Od to 31s 6d for prime, 25s to 27s for medium, and 22s to 24s Gd for cow and inferior per lOOlbs. Veal calves made 4s Cd to 525-, according to siza and quality.

There was a fair yarding of store cattle, and though they were chiefly of poor quality there was a better demand, and most of tho entry changed hands, yearlings making 22s to 295,

15to 18 mouths 40s to 525, two-ycai' steers £3 8s to £4 Bs, two-year heifers £4 to £4 Bs, and dry cows 35s to £4 2s.
