WAIMEA WEST.

The annual school treat was held oh Thursday. Weather conditions were perfect' both during the day and at night. The committee worked hard,, and' were rewarded by a crowning success. After full justice had been done to the excellent tea by both young and old the room was- prepared for the. concert and prize-giving. _ Mr Lock presided, and at the opening^inade a few very appropriate remarks anent the importance o.f education. He congratulatod the district qii the interest displayed in their school, as evidenced by their attendance that evening. Later he gave in his usual style some reminiscences " of American travel. The concert was contributed to by vooal items by Misses Fairey and Cross, and Messrs Betts, Grainger, and the Richmond male quartet party (whose numbers were especially appreciated), and the school children and Glee Club, and instrumental items from Misses Hunter and Messrs Shone, White and Eden (2). The. awards to tb> children were then presented. Mr Lock then thanked all who had contributed to the en joymcjnt of the evening, and Mr Palmer, chairman of the committee, proposed" a vote- of thanks to Mr Lock for presiding. The singing of the National , Anthem, closed . this part of the function. The room was cleared for dancing, and, a Jew more enjoyable hours were spent, the music being kindly supplied by "Miss Price and Mr Shone. Quita a feature at this year's function was the decoration of the tables, which constituted quite a small flower show. The catering for the tea was carried out by Mr H. P. Foster, of Brightwater and did him; every credit, and mention should also be made of the excellent ham sandwiches which, of course, 7 were cut that morning by the wives of the committeemen." '
