MOTUEKA.

A concert organised by the Orchestral Society, was held in the'lnstitute on Wednesday night/ There; was only a moderate attendance -of the public, which was regrettable, as the majority of- the , programme consisted of really good and well rendered items. Mrs Anderson and- Miss t>. Stilwell were the accompanists, and the - instrumental numbers and choruses were trained by Mr Wallis Edwards, who is deserving of the greatest praise for the : excellence of this portion of the, programme. The Orchestral Society opened : with, the "Match, from : AthaHe/' and this, number was splendidly played. Miss -Suckling sang "Daffodils." in her usual finished style, and Mr Hodge and Miss Crichton played; a beautiful violin duet, and elicited .hearty applause from the audience. Mr W. W. French brought down tho house with; the recitation "Itubeustein." A negro song by Mr Hodge with a fine chorus Tvas heartily' encored. Mr Fawoett played the" trombone solo "Amabel,'^ the tone and execution being very fine. - Messrs ; Smith, Grey, Poole, and Edwards" sang the quartette "When Evening's Twilight." The orchestra concluded the first part of tho programme with a well played selection from "Maritana>" and opened the second part with "Gtems of Hasjdn.'V Mr Edwards was in fine Voice in the song "Big Ben," and was encored. Mesdames Boyes and Canayari and Messrs Edwards and Hodge rendered the quartette . "The, phafers.?' This was one of the gems of the evning, and was. redemanded by the audience. The orchestra played a Minuet and Trio in G, and the Rev. C. B. Jordan gave a good humourous recitation. Messrs Edwards and Hodge sang the duet "The Harbour Lights^ 1 '; th&rS Vfe blending nicely. Brooklyn defeated Dovedale last week, the scores being very small, viz., Brooklyn 36 and 58, Dovedale -i(i and 20. Th-s latter team only require<l 43 to win, but J. W Duncan (7 for 8) was unplayable, Jiis swerve from the off paralysing the batsmen. 0. Eyles bowletl well for Dovedale, toking 7 for 13 and 0 for 15. Brooklyn is now leading for the championship, but the positions of the leading teams may alter as the games progress.
