SETTLERS AND MISSIONARIES. FRICTION ON THE LABOUR QUESTION. [Press Association-— Copyright. ] (Received August 23, 1.5 a.m.) Sydney, August 22. Island news states that M. Colohn&, deputy French Resident at the New Hebrides, in welcoming M. Martin, who was recently appointed to replace M. Mouffiard as Resident, declared that it was fortunate M. Martin had been appointed to. the head of affairs, because the situation was grave, and there was a struggle be=r t weeaT the settlers and the Presbyterian missionaries. He added: "We must unite against these missionaries, and if necessary start a holy war." . -» ' M. Bourdois, Mayor of Port Vila, said the great question was that of obtaining labour, for the want of which the plantations were going to ruin. Plenty of labourers wore available* in the islands, but they were prevented from engaging 'themselves though they wanted to. They had two enemies to fight, the copra makers and tho missionaries. The latter were powerful in numbers and wealth.
