SPEECH AT NEW YORK,
'•THE NAVAL CRUISE,
ADMIRATION OF THE WEST POINT ACADEMY. (Received April 19, 10.30 p.m.) New York, April. 19. Lord Kitchener was the guest of the Pilgrims' Club at the Waldorf Astoria'Hotel. He said that in Australia he had heard a good deal about the American fleet. What struck the;Commonwealth was not only the courtesy and goodwill" of the Admiral and his officers', but the good behaviour, smart-ness-and preparedness for war of the men and ships. The visit had created an excellent impression, and demonstrated^ the world power of the American Navy, arid brought home to the p'eopleof Australia and New Zealand the kindly feelings the Americans .en.tertained towards them. _ ' Lord Kitchener said his opinion of West Point might be summed up in the word "thorough." It made men of raw lads, formed their characters, and instructed their minds.
He added: I recommended the Australian and New Zealand Governments to make West Point their model, but they will have to work by degrees, for it has taken a century to create West Point.
