THE MISHAP TO THE KENNEDY.

HEAVY WEATHER EXPERIENCED. TOWED TO PORT BY THE ALEXANDER. Reference was mado in yesterday's issue to the mishap to the Kennedy off Westport on Saturday morning. A heavy sea was running at the time, together with a strong westerly gale, when one of the mam steam pipes burst, and the vessel was left to depend upon a single engine. Prior to •this accident, something went wrong with the rudder, ,and considerable difficultywas experienced in setting matters right; Fortunately the. Alexander, which was waiting to- get into Westport^ was able to go to the TKennedy'.s assistance, "and towed her as far as Kahurangi Point. Owing to the rough weather the hawsers and chains used in the tow parted several times, and both steamers received a severe buffeting. The Alexander, which. had been at sea since last Wednesday, was running short of bunker coal, and she returned to Nelson to replenish supplies. The Kennedy pro-' ceeded alone to Farewell Spit, where she "was 'picked up by the Mangapapa, and towed to a -safe anchorage. The Alexander returned to the Spit on Sunday night, and brought the Kennedy into port yesterday morning. Repairs are now being effected, and the vessel will be ready for sea in a few days. The Kennedy also lost two anchors during the storm. Some fifteon hundred cases of dynamite, which were on the Kennedy, were transhipped into the Alexander for Greymouth yesterday.
