MR PIPER'S CANDIDATURE

Mr Jesse Piper has been nominated for the Mayoralty by Messrs A... A. i Grace, and W.-G. Wilson. A well attended and enthusiastic meeting of Mr Piper's supporters was held in the Co-operative rooms last evening, a number of ladies being present. The Chairman ■ (Mr Grace) reported that the marking of the roll by members of the executive committee showed that the support of Mr Piper's interest was increasing beycod expectations. Ho intimated liis intention of taking up the challenge that Mr Pet- | tit had thrown down to him at the Theatre last Thursday evening when he (Mr Pettit) made his statement in regard to the contract system versus day labour, and emphasised the opin•ion that if the large dam had been constructed by day labour it would be equally imperfect. Arrangements were made in connection with the bringing of Mr Piper's supporters to the poll on the 27th. Mr Piper addressed the meeting and signified his intention of dealing on the public platform with the strictures which Mr Pettit had made upon his municipal policy. .Councillor Adams voiced his opinions as an- engineer on the construction of the large concrete dam, which he condemned. It was, decided to hold a meeting of supporters later in the week for the 'impose of making Anal arrangement** in connection with Mr Piper's public meeting, when matters of great public interest would be brought forward.
