OPIUM TRADE IN AUSTRALIA.
A return prepared for the Federal Minister for Customs shows that in tho years 1906-1909, inclusive, 44791 b of opium were seized in New South Wales, of the estimated value of £13,438. The penalties imposed totalled £4909, and the penalties paid £2041. Informers received £125, Customs officers £81, and the police £48. There were 278 offenders. . ' In Victoria there were 107 offenders. " The quantity seized totalled 11381 b, and the estimated value was £3416. The penalties imposed reached £1592, and the penalties paid £1234. Informers received £142, Customs officers £31, and tlio police £109. In West Australia there were 132 offenders. The quantity seized was 4561 b, of an estimated value of £1368. The penalties would reach £839. Informers received £142, Customs officers £17, and the police £89. Jn - Tasmania there were only two cases. The value .was £6 15s. Thero wexe no rewards for informers, police or Customs officers.
