THE STEAMER KOI.

A START MADE AT PUMPING. MORE PUMT3 TO BE OBTAINED. The Terawhiti, with the Alexander in attendance, went out to the Koi yesterday morning, and the pump was connected up, but would not work satisfactorily, partly due, it was discovered by the diver, to a towel having covered a portion of the end of the suotion pump. This was removed, and steps taken to prevent a recurrence, and the difficulties with the pump being overcome another startwas made at low water last evening, the Nikau taking the place of the Aiexa'nder as assisting vessel. ',fwo pumps were connected up, the main, a ten inch pump, with 'the saloon compartment of the Koi, and a six inch" pump with the engine room compartment. The main pump worked well, and in about twenty minutes lifted half the water out of thei saloon compartment, but the 6ix inch pump would not work. In consequence work had to be stopped, and the Terawhiti returned to port, the Nikau sailing for Wellington. It was considered inadvisable to continue pumping with the ( main pump, as the otK ject sought could not be attained with the engine room still full of water, and it is necessary to lift the water from the two main compartments simultaneously in order to keop the vessel on a fairly level keel. . The Nikau will bring over from W«l---lington "additional pumps for the Terawhiti, and the work will be resumed to-morrow or Saturday.
