THE MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS.
So far little, general interest has been manifested in the .municipal elections, ..lyh'ich-.are now . drawing near. The contest .'-for- ; the -Mayoralty is again to be fought out betwjeen the party representing theu regime which, has obtained during the last few years, and that standihg_ for progress, sound finance,, and businesslike control of municipal undertakings and general works. Before such a desirable condition of affairs can be initiated, there must be a change in the leadership of the Council, and otherwise of its per-: apr^iiel to a suflßcient extent to tranfifofih the present minority into a workin| ia&jprity. If the burgesses have been convinced by ; : the eve,nts 'of the last twelve . months, coupled with the previous drift of municipal affairs, of the wisdom of putting ajx -end to a system which is marked by steady retrogression, they will have an opportunity of doing so on the twentyseventh of this month,. when the.annual election of Mayor, and a poll to fill an extraordinary vacancy in the Council, will be held. The Mayoral election campaign : will be inaugurated by Mr Pettit at the Theatrei Royal this evening, when he will lay his views on the. present condition of city affairßand:the;needs"'of the future before the' electors, who, it is hoped, will be present in large numbers.
