MOTUEKA,

At the usual monthly meeting of the Borough Council all the councillors were present, his worship the Mayor (Mr. ¥. W. Thorp) in the chair. The clerk reported the sum of £130 ; was outstanding in unpaid rates. The Bowling Club was granted permission to cut turf in Fearon street, under the supervision of the Mayor, and Cra Staples and Ryder. In reply to a letter from the Waimea County Council re certain protective works near the Motueka bridge, it was resolved that Crs. Ryder, Staples Satherley and Simpson be a committee to inspect the proposed work, with power to act. Resolved that the Council be represented at the Municipal Conference. A letter was received from Messrs. Pitt and Moore re dedication of land in Greenwood street, and the matter was referred to the Council's solicitor.

Mr. W. Lave and Mr. W. Edwards applied for gaslitter's licenses and the applications were referred back for further particulars. . It was decided that any person using the Public Pound without permission, b eprosecuted. Accounts amounting to £115 18s 9d were passed for payment. The tender of E. Benfeemann of £9 10s was accepted for fence at the Motueka Bridge. , Resolved that the trusts interested in the Whakarewa protective works be written-to, pointing out that provision will have to be made by them for progress payments on the work. A cheque for £30 progress payment was drawn, to be held over until certain conditions are complied with. The Overseer was empowered to arrange for dog collars. Resolved that the sum of £200 be paid to the gas contractor, as a first instalment.

At the conclusion of the business the Mayor thanked the Council for the courtesy and help extended to him as Mayor during the past year, and after reviewing the year's work he hoped that surface drainage system of the Borough would be completed at no distant date.

Several of the Councillors hoped that His Worship would consent to be nominated for the position of Mayor again, but the Mayor stated that there were too many calls on his time and that he had practically decided to give up the position. A very pleasant trip down the Bay took place .on. .7, Thursday when the Council, ex-Councillor Canavan; and the Council- staff, entertained the Mayor on his yacht "Ngaru." r -Several of the bays were visited and botanising and fishing parties enjoyed themselves immensely.

At the conclusion of the cruise, several toasts were honoured notably that of the Mayor, and also the Borough Council. In response to a unanimously expressed wish, Mr Thorp decided to allow himself to' be nominated- for- the position of Mayor for the ensuing year At the last meeting of the Harbour Board it was resolved to get the opinion of Mr. Ferguson EntrLneer of the Wellington Harbour Board) on the proposed Harbour works.
