CHRIST CHURCH AND WOOD SUNDAY SCHOOLS.

The annual prize giving took place inthe Shelbourne Sunday school last; evening. -The vicar (the Rev J. V..; Kempthorne) presided. After prayer and the singing^* a hymn Mr Kempthorne briefly explained that Miss Batchelor was there to give an.address, • therefore he would distribute the prizes first. He explained that the method of apportioning the prizes had been changed, as a consequence there was a larger number of prizes. The system was that every child wlio made 580 marks out of a possible bUU received a first class prize ; those who made 400 a second class prize, wliilst those between 300 and 400 would receive a certificate. He mentioned that in the diocesan examination the gold medal was won by a girl in Christ Church Sunday school, Dons Moore. She appeared dressed as a Chinese lady of the middle class, but without Chinese shoes, which it was quite as well not to attempt to put on These tiny shoes were held up for the children to see. The children wiere told how the little girls' feet were bound up and crushed to i keep them from growing. The , Chinese Government have now passed a law to prevent it. Miss Batchelor then told a story of a visit to the village of "The Hall of the Nine Dragons," and how a little boy in. a tattered blue dreas used to run after her Bible wor man and ask her to teach him a few words from the book. A most thrilling and interesting story was told of this liMe boy and his. sister, who had been sold into slavery by their own mother and cruelly treated. How the children of the missionary orphanage prayed constantly that the little ones might be. delivered from slavery and misery and brought to them. This at last came about and both the boy and girl beoame Christians. The boy took as his christian name when baptised "Obtain Peace," the girl "Obtain Rest," a younger sister. "Obtain Love." Several other incidents of Chinese child life were told, and at the end Miss Batchelor begged the children to sometimes think of and pray for the Chinese children, who numbered about one third of the children of the world. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded Miss Batchelor at the close.
