MR. EDISON'S LATEST.
It is announced that. Mr. Edison, J that remarkable genius, to whom the world is indebted for so many importj- int inventions, has made a new dfsI ■-•overy, which is likely to revolutionise the system of electric driving for travelling purposes. For some years yast, Mr. Edison has been concentrating his attention upon the invention a storage battery which would solvo ;:>;ne of tho most difficult traffic prob;e;ns of the, age, and at the same timo reduce the cost of traction. He has nade many attempts, and it has more than oiice been announced that he had succeeded, or was on the eve of ,suceocMling, but until now no definite .-statement has boen made that his patient investigation of tho subject . had been rewarded with success. The , report to hand states that the latest battery was installed in a special tramway car carrying twenty-four passengers. The car took a ten-foot gradient with case, and ran easily under sc-i'iiiingly perfect conditions. Electrical engineers who witnessed tho trial admit that tho battery did all - the inventor claimed for it, but as yet 1 the}' arc natTfrally reserved on the subject. If the invention is all Mr. Edison claims for it— and Mr. Edison is scarcely the man to put forward claims which he cannot substantiate- — then wo. are on the eve of a great revolution in regard to the means ' of [travel. For the inability to store^ electricity in, batteries has hitherto been the greatest handicap to the development of means of cheap travelling by electricity. It will revolutionist' the motor trade, and pave the costly equipments now rendered necessary in connection witli clrctiic 1 traction. I -' • ___________
