NEWS OF THE DAY.

Wo understand that apples for export have been offering so freely that it is very probable that a further shipment will be made next month, but no definite steps can be taken until the matter of a steamer is arranged. A meeting of the Albion' Football Club will be held at Snow's rooms tomorrow evening. The annual meeting of subscribers to tlie Nelson Institute will be held in the Library this evening at eight o'clock. The list of deer stalking licenses issued to 15th March is published in another column. At Wellington on Thursday last, the Arbitration Court, in chambers, made an order apportioning compensation moneys . held by the Public Trustee as personal representative of Thomas Wilfred Frost, late, of WakapuaKa; labourer, killed on December '2nd, 1909. Compensation received, £327 12s ; one-third to widow, and two-thirds to Zita Delei Frost and Thomasen Sheela Margaret Frost, infant dependants. The annual flower, fruit and vegetable show in connection with, the Motueka Valley Horticultural Society will take place in the Druids' Hall, Tapawera, on Easter Monday. ./■. „ ■ ' • Mr Win Coleman., of Richmond, who was the sole judge for the stock classes at the Westland A. and P. Association Show (Hokitika) and Inangahua A. and P. Association Show (Reef ton) has received letters from both Associations expressing appreciation of his services, and'hopes that lie will again consent to fill the position, Mr Coleman was especially struck with the progress made by the Inangahua Association; the show held last month being the second held at Reefton. Tlie stock entries were not numerous, but the greater part was of really good quality ? and very creditable indeed to a district which is not looked upon as a fanning one. On this point, however, Mr Coleman is of opinion that Reefton will be the most important farming centre on the West Coast. The splendid display of produce made came to him as a surprise the fodder roots, vegetables, etc., oeing as fine as any that he had seen shown. Reefton has the advantage of being in a central position with regard to both the Grey and Insrfigahua Valleys, also tho lands, towards Maruia, and if any^hmg like the same ratio of progress -is- maintained, the Reefton show will soon be the premier orie of the West Coast.
