FIRE IN WAIMEA ROAD.

RISING SUN HOTEL DESTROYED

(From "The Colonist," Mar. 4.) The Rising Sun Hotel, situated in Waimea road, near the Boys' College, was totally destroyed by fire about three o'clock this morning. The fire was observed from the city by Constables Hickey and McGregor, who immediately sounded an alarm. By that time, however, the flames had. secured a firm hold of tho, building," and the intense heat effectually prevented any effort to save the contents. The outbreak appeared to have originated in the front of the building, and spread with surprising rapidity, ewveloping the entire edifice in a few minutes. Tho licensee, Mr -Mitchell, and tho other occupants of the building escaped in safety. ' Somo time elapsed before tho Fire Brigade reached tho. scene, but in the meantime a single fireman had done yeoman service. Securing the hose reel housed next to the hotel, hq had a jet playing on the adjoining buildings, and prevented them from igniting, al- ' though they were in imminent danger for somo. time. The Brigade on its arrival lost no time in getting several leads of hose into operation, and removed all chance of the' fire spreading. The hotql was owned by Messrs J. R. Dodson and Son, and had been for some time in the occupation of Mr, Mitchell. The insurances were not ascertainable this morning. Later, j The insurance on the Rising Sun Hotel, which was destroyed by fire early yesterday morning, was £450 in the StandarcLoffice. The stock and furniture were insured in the Northern office for £300.
