The Greymouth correspondei fcofthe "Lyttelton Times" states tha., Mr L. F. Ayson, chief inspector of fisheries, during- his staty on the West Coast established a Government -hatchery for quinnat salmon .at Kokatahi. The hatchery has been erected by "the Marine Department out of a vote of £250 provided by Parliament for the acclimatisation of salmon on the West Coast. Before selecting a site for initial operations, Mr Ayson first visited South Westland, and is reporting on the suitability of the streams in that locality for fish distribution. A very convenient site has been selected at the Kohatahi, and an adequate water supply lias been brought in from Duck Creek near by.. The hatchery is capable of dealing with half a million ova, but it is not expected that any large number will be dealt with for the first season or two. The salmon ova will be collected on the East Coast, where the quinnat, which, have been introduced from the northern waters of America, are thriving .well. The hatchery will probably be continued for about five years, by which time the fish ought to be well established in the waters of the West Coast.

Mr H. E. Pratten, relating his experiences on his recent trip to the East to members of the Chamber of Manufacturers on Monday of last week (says the Sydney "Daily Telegraph"), said that in Tokio ho engaged a university student to show him the sights of the city, a commission which the student accepted for the advantage it would yield him in practising English and the resultant j'eri. During their travels they came across & statue of Togo. "I naturally thought that the memory of the daring Japanese admiral would hold as high a place in the veneration of the Japanese as our own Nelson," said Mr Pratten. "My guide, however, dispelled that allusion by a significant remark. 'There are hundreds of men in Japan,' he said, 'who -would do as well as Togo, if they got the chance. 1 "

All things must come to an end, and the Summer Clearance Sale at Mrs Anstice's is drawing near its close, ;but though this sale lias been such a huge BUccesß, there are crowds more lines to clear, so we've marked them down still lower in price, and you've still another chance to make real worth-while savings by buying now. The Koreans appear to be totally unconscious of the hopeless position into wliich they have allowed their countr3' to drift. Thej r expect to awake, one morning to discover that the Japanese have been driven off, and that the representatives of "a friendly nation, cap in hand, are awaiting to congratulate them upon the return of good fortune. They still labour under the delusion that assistance is coining from outside. The Resident-General is unquestionably dictator of Korea to-day, and the red disc of the Rising Sun everywhere proclaims the Mikado as virtual sovereign. That is substantially the position, and the foreigners are only concerning themselves about the commercial rights they fear to be in jeopardy under the new regime.

Messrs Bisloy Bros, and Co. announce the following sales: — To-mor-row, stock sale at Motueka j on Wednesday, sale of hides, skins, and wool; on Friday, annual ram fair: and stock sale at Richmond yards.

"A good name.is better than great riches,'' and I/ock, the Universal Provider^ hag a gooa name for giving first class value and; for fair and square dealing. We append a portion of a poem sent to him : — Such love as his, what tongue can fitlyteU! - Save he whose heart has owned its magio spell ; I With heaving breast, but hope as firm as rock, , He breathed that name, th' inspiring, iame of "Lock." Straightway to Lock's with little cash,. 'tis true, '. They wend -their way, he looking rather blue. But wonders never cease (though quality of the best), All was so wondrous cheap, _their doubts were soothed to rest. They're married now, and prattlers round them throng, As happy in their home as suimmer day is long; Yet oft in loving circle they tell that little 'flock, How grateful still they feel to good old William Look, The Complete Furnisher.
