The following will represent the Nelson Rifles against the Defence Who this afternoon on the Mudliat range : — Lieutenant Johnson, Sergeants Mitehener and Frank, Corporals Manssen and Alborough, Privates Coiiroy, Thomson and iiroivn ; emergency, Morris. Shooting wnl commence at 1.30 p.m,

There was a fair attendance, at the Loyal Nelson Good Templar Lodge last night. One candidate was initiated. A motion of sympathy was passed' to Bro Ri Watson, on the death of his mother. A letter was read from the Past Grand Chief Templar, Bro E. H. Taylor, of the Thames, and the members were pleased to hear that his health was improving* A number of the members took part in the programme, and some good specimens of humour were given. As tho members of the Richmond Encounter Lodge will pay the town lodge a visit next Friday evening, it was resolved to have a pound night. A friendly debating contest .wi'l take place between the two lodges that evening.

The annual meeting of subscribers of the Nelson Institute will be held on Aloudaj' evening, March 21st. Nominations for the committee must be made fourteen days before the nieeting. The attention of candidates and proposers is directed to the rules governing nominations.

Madame Elderhorst will give a pianoforte ■ recital in the Nelson School of Music on March 7th. Madame Elderhorst is a musician of undoubted standing, and some London opinions of her pianoforte! playing are given in the advertisement which appears in this issue.

Mr P. R. Jeffreys, a theological student in his last year from Jinox College, Dunetlinj has been touring in the back blocks for some months. Ho arrived in Nelson last week, and conducted 1 the services in the Presbyterian .Church last Sunday, and will again officiate .to-morrowj both morning and evening. At the evening service, Mr Jeffreys purposes giving some account of -his work, w-hich is practically a new departure on iho part of the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand:
