RESULT OF THE ELECTIONS.
A RESTRAINING INFLUENCE. LORD AVEBURY'S VIEWS. (Received Feb. 17, 9.30 p.m.) London, Feb. 17. Lord Ayebury, in a letter to a cor: respondent, says: "I certainly do not think it can be said that the electors condemned the House of Lords for. rejecting, tho Budget. No doubt tlio result of the elections must exercise a restraining influence upon tho Liberal leaders. It seems to me that Mr Asquith promised Home Rule, but not in the immediate future." The "Manchester Guardian" demands a large creation of Liberal peers. It states that the expiry of the Braddon compromise will allow the referendum to be seen at work in Australia, and a similar check upon serious disturbance of tho constitutional balance might work well in Britain in conjunction with limiting the duration of parliaments and giving the Lords a suspensory veto only.
