During tho second Antarctic summer he explored the South Shetlands, and then went to South Alexander the First Land. Early in the voyage collisions with bergs caused a leak it was impossible to repair, and two tons of water an hour entered the ship, necessitating pumping throughout the voyage. The crew suffered from scurvy and heart trouble.
