RICHMOND BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The monthly meeting of the Richmond Borough Council was held on Tuesday, the Bth hist, at 7.30 p.m. Present: The Mayor. (Mr A. Sheat, in the chair), Crs Hunt Coleman, Bell, Hart, Holland and Wilkes. Accounts were submitted and passed for payment as follows :— General account £75 13s 7d. Cr Coleman reported that the Works Committee had further consulted with Mr Lammas in reference to the watercourse through his property, and that Mr Lammas claimed to Jiave done all that was necessary. The opinion of the Works Committee was that the matter should now be left to the parties concerned to settle between themselves. In reference to the proposed concrete entrance crossing to Messrs Groucher and Son's grain store, the Works Committee stated that, after inspecting the site, they approved of a concrete structure, and permission | was accordingly given to , Messrs ; Croucher to "construct the same. 1 Mr J. Lewis presented an account for £7 10s for a small acetylene generator supplied by him. As the genei rator had not been working very satisfactorily, there was some question as to passing the account ; but on Mr | Lewis agreeing to put the thing in • order, the account was passed for payment. Mr Lewis also gave some information as to the best means of extending the lighting of the borough with acetylene, estimate- of cost, etc., being given. A deputation waited on tho Council, headed by Mr J. B. Ingram, complaining of the state of the ditch or watercourse on the north side of 'Queen street, opposite their properties i and requesting the Council to lay pipes : in the same and fill it in. The deputatation were informed that this work had already been authorised, and that it would be carried out as opportunity occurred, and as road parings became available for filling in. I A letter was received from the County Engineer re taking gravel from the river, stating that the County's prohibition applies to all equally, ouu that the County Council would consider favourably any application for gravel that the borough might make from time to time. The object of the County was to prevent the carting of gravel during wet weather, when the roads are soft. A further letter was received from ; the County Clerk, stating that the I Waimea County Council had resolved I to expend the sum of £20 in the pur- | chase of grey owls to cope with the small bird, nuisance, and requesting the Council to vote a sum for the -r.me purpose. I A London firm wrote, forwarding a j report and sundry papers on gas mat- ' ters, and offering their services <is consulting engineers, etc. Cr Hunt submitted a sketch of a proposed loading bank at the itidimond railway station. He stated that the matter had been brought bdfore the Hon T. Mackenzie on his recant visit, and he had requested to be supplied with a sketch of the prop^d improvement. It was resolved that the sketch. ba forwarded to the Hon T. Mackenzie through the member for the district. Mr E. E. Tucker applied for permission to erect a bridge over tie ditch opposite his property on Salisbury road. — Permission granted, scoject to the supervision of the Wo.-ics Committee. Cr Bell thought the position of foreman dayman should have been advertisod for. The Mayor explained that no appointment had been nado, and that Mr Cresswell was still falling; that position. Cr Hunt spoke of the desirable less of selling the unused gravel -reserve on section 70, and purchasing another with the proceeds. He thought a site containing better gravel could b*e obtained. Tha proposal was referred to the Works Committee to inquire, and report to next meeting.
