PLUNKET SHIELD MATCH.
AUCKLAND VERSUS OTAGO. BRILLIANT BATTING. Auckland, Feb. 11. The representative cricket match for the Plunket Shield between Auckland and Otago was commenced here to-day in perfect weather, and on an excellent wicket. Auckland won the toss, and decided to bat, the result being that at the close of the day the local, team's score stood at dux runs for 6 wickets. The batting was at times brilliant, the runs made by Hemus (109) and Relf (118) being compiled by correct and stylish cricket. There was considerable interest in Macartney's appearance at the bowling crease, but up to a certain period the Auckland men not only play- J ed him with confidence, but scored | freely off him.
