Mr Gnay, owner of Whit© Island, has received news from the Cavendish laboratory, Cambridge, that a trace of radium 'has been found in small samples of the water taken, from the lake on the island, and that a larger quantity is asked for for a further test 1 at the earliest opportunity. Regarding 1 ihe White Island radium telegram, Mr Andrew Gray, the owner of the island, furnishes the following information': "I have had no direct communication, from the Cavendish Laboratory, but I have had a letter from Mr Galbraith, late of Auckland, stating that a sample of Whit Island lake water obtained by the courtesy of Mr Alexander, an Auckland solicitor, while on a yachting cruise, had been examined at Cambridge by the Hon. R. J. Shutt, I Professor: of Physics. This sample showed slight traces in solids of radium. Thiswas in-' 1907 when radium was: less available^ I telegraphed to a friend to try 'to get a jar of water during an excursion to-day from Opotiki. I presume this got about, and I inspired the Auckland message published to-night."
