THE MAYORAL HONORARIUM.

(To the Editor of "The Colonist.") Sir,— l notice at a meeting called to consider tue Governor's prospective visit to Welsc-n, a speaker reterred to the moneys the Uouncil hands the Mayor quarterly; money that is distinctly for the purpose of somewJiat reimbursing a mayor for expenditures that arisa in supporting the om'ce, such as for instance entertaining visitors, subscription lists, supporting matters social and generally upholding the office with dignity, it must be admitted the amount would be small in supporting the office so creditably as in the case of some previous holders of the office. If one reflects upon this matter, it becomes most difficult to see in what way this money is being used for the purpose for which it is voted. One may have their own private opinion upon this unatter. As a ratepayer I trust the | City Council will investigate this and satisfy themselves (and through them the ratepaj'ers generally) as to L the payment of this money from our •rates, and its having been spent for the purpose for which it was intended. In any case let us see how much of' this, tho people's, money will be expended in upholding the office of Mayor of Nelson with the dignity it should carry in connection with the contemplated visit- of tthe Governor. — I am, etc.. RATEPAYER. Nelson, 11th February.
