All indications point to the fact that less than ten miles below our feet a red heat is maintained permanently, and within twenty a white heat. Ten miles above us we have the pitiless cold, far below zero, of interplanetary space. To what a narrow zone of delicately balanced temperature is life confined. A violin constructed of 3374 white birchwood tooth-picks has been made by Thomas Atkinson, of Indiana, TJ. S.A., a maker of freak articles. When the violin was completed no one could tell from the outside appearance that it was made of so many tiny bits. When tested by musicians who knew, the unique instrument was declared to be extremely- valuable for its qualities, apart from its peculiar construction.
