New York correspondent reports that official returns show that there is 600 millions sterling worth of food in the. varions trusts' cold stores, including 14 million carcases of: » cattle ; ; 25 . million sheep; 50 million pigs'- and 5 millions worth of fish for the Lenten season. The cost of food therefore is not due . to any scarcity.. The "Chronicle" adds that despite the increase of railway receipts and other signs of prosperity, American so*, cial circles are thoroughly unsettled by the Government's attitude towards trusts. ■ The value of tho stock of thirty-two railways and : twentynine industrial combinations has depreciated 207 million sterling in six months; ' owing • to a fear that the trusts would be prosecuted.
