NEWS OF THE DAY.

The Wellington-Brindisi despatch of mails of the 31st Deoember arrived at London on the afternoon of the 4th instant.

The quarterly examinations of volunteer officers will be conducted on March 16th, instead of the 2nd, as previously notified.

Archdeacon Baker will speak at the annual meeting of the Gleaners' Union, when, it iB hoped that there will be a good gathering of gleaners and others interested in missionary work.

Mining has started well in Reefton district in 1910. The developments in the mines north and south of the Big River have opened, a prospect, and the St. • George Syndicate in the same locality is on good stons. It is currently! stated 'that the new level of the Energetic .is on one of the best reefs yet encountered, and the Progress Mine has struck a remarkably good Une'.of reef.

Two recent arrivals from England .(says, tlie ."Dominion") had an experience of the .'New Zealand bush, they are not likely to forget for. a long time Information was brought to Opotiki to the effect. that two men who had been employed in the neighbourhood had got "bushed" in an endeavour to push through to Motu. They were not familiar with the bush tracks, and evidently soon wandered off the path. From Monday till Friday -they were hopelessly lost, and eventually they' came out near the Pakihi forest reserve in a completely exhausted condition. During their sojourn in the bush they were drenched by rain. Their swags had been swept down a stream, and they were without food for the greater part of the time. One of the men was so exhausted when he reached the open country again that he. was unable to walk.
