I put a " cane under the knob of the bade hall door. I put the fastenings over the t bathroom windows. The parlour firo ' has coal on. I put the cake-box back [ in the closet I did not drink all tho ( milk. It is not going to rain. Nobody gave me any message for you. I | mailed your letter as soon as I got \ down town. Your mother did not call . at the office. Nobody died that we arc . interested in. Did not hear of a mar- , riage or engagement. I was very i busy at the office making out bills. I i have hung my clothes over chair- [ backs. I want a new egg for breakj fast. I think that is all, and I will > now put o\it the light." ! Mr. Jenkins felt that he had > j hedged against all enquiry, and a tri- • 3 umphant smile was upon his face as i ho took hold of the gas-check, ana sighted a line for the hod, when he was earthq naked by the query from Mrs. Jenkins: "Why didn't you take off your hat?"
