j THE OTAGO BOARD CRITICISED. [United Pskss Association.] (nvercargill, Feb. 4. At the meeting of the Southland Education Board 'to-day, . Mr J. C. Thomson, M.P.,! moved that this Board take no action with regard to the resolution; of the Otago Board, protesting against the consistent ignoring of the Boards and the exclusion of members from conferenceis, such as that about to be held in Wellington. Mr Thomson's motion also contained an expression of disapproval of the Otago Board's resolution. He mentioned that the Otago Board had frequently raised difficulties in regard to educational matters, and he argued that the Boards were not competent to advise on matters on which the inspectors were asked to give an opinion, as they were of a purely technical nature. He did not know that the Department had ever ignored the Southland Board. Mr W. McAlister seconded and supported the motion. The Conference was evidently one for experts. Mr Gilchnst considered the Otago Board was altogether too ingMr Fisher oharacerised the Otago Board as being something in the nature of a Scotch terrier, alv/ays worrying somebody about something. Mr Crossby Smith jocosely stated that while the Otago Board fiercely opposed centralisation, it appeared to want to have the Education Department made the Otago Education Board.
