The Board of Trade invited- Nottingham manufacturers' opinions through the Chamber of Commerce, on the probable effect of the new French duties on hemp and cotton yarns. The Chamber reported that as the duty already levied was prohibitive, and was completely killing the export trade, it mattered little whether the burden was increased. The Board's attention was called to the fact that French yams were allowed to enter, and were already selling in large quantities to the detriment of home traders. -
