NEWS OF THE DAY.

A meeting of master painters and builders cited by the Nelson Painters' Union will be held to-morrow evening at Mercer's rooms. The new post office at Wakefield will be formally opened at three o'clock this afternoon by the Hon. R. McKenzie (Minister of Public Worka). There are some hundreds of Nelson women, who received the most important part of their education, from tho late Mrs Sait, whose funeral took place yesterday, and was attended by some of her old pupils. A suggestion has been, made that a memorial of some sort should be f urnished by ex-pupils, the idea being to limit subscriptions to one shilling. To afford an opportunity of discussing the niatter, a meeting of former pupils has been convened to be held at the residence of Mrs J. M. Calder this evening. Mrs Sait was for a long number of yoars head mistress of the girls' State school which was held in the building now occupied as the J_ducation Board offices. The following new subscribers have been added to the Nelson telephone exchange :— Geo. Hogg, Collingwood street; Mrs Hood, Shakespeare Walk; C. J. Harley, Milton street; ■ E. J. Kinzett, aVnguard street; R. • D. Martin, Waimea street; Panama Hotel; and A. Stewart, Trafalgar street. . • Tlio January "Review of Reviews" is, as usual, full of world-wide information. The character sketch is of Lord Lansdowne,, the man who engineered the scheme which, resulted in the destruction of the Budget in the House of LordsT There is an excellent review of Lieutenant Shackleton s book, "The Heart of the Antarctic," illustrated with several photographs., The description is one of the most interesting and informative that we 'have read. The section devoted to a •review of the month's magazines 'S very complete, and invaluable to anyone who wishes to keep in the march of current thought and events. • A few of the friends of the late Colonel Pitt met on Saturday evening and had a talk about the proposed; memorial. ' Mr Cock presided. By request, Mr Aitoheson Smith gave his ideas as to erecting a cairn: It wais decided to request the commanding officer of- the volunteer distriot to^pJace the matter before the present and- past members of the. corps. Captain Stiles was chosen as secretarj', and v Mr Glasgow, solicitor, as treasurer. It was decided at a future meeting of subscribers to move for the election of a joint committee of volunteers and civilians to have the memorial erected in acordance with the .wishes of the majority of those subscribing to the fund. The chairman recognised ,the trouble Mr. Colin Campbell had taken jn the matter. The contents of the v sumptuous Qiristmas number of the "Windsor to hand through Messrs Jackson, and Co., are extraordinarily varied and attractive. Justus Miles, Forman contributes a new serial story entitled "Bianca's Daughter," and the opening chapters promise well for a repetition of . tha success of the author's previous serials, "The Quest," and "The" Garden of Lies." A long story by A. E. W. Mason, and complete stories by such important authors as Cutliffe Hyne, Robert Barr, Barry. Pain, Eden Phillpotts, Mrs. Katheaine Thurston, Flora. Annie Steele, and W. J. Locke provide an ample repast for readers of fiction. Fifteen finely printed coloured plates accompany the various articles from niasterpieees by Millais, W. 'Denby Sadler, Lucy Kemp-Welch, Sigismund Goetze, George Hitchcock, B. W. Leader, Ri A., Alfred Parsons, A.R. A., and other distinguished painters. In addition to these, there is a lavish array of black and white talent by well-known and distinguished artists, including Maurice Greiffenhagen, Fred Pegram, .L.^ Raven-Hill, Dudley Haixly, Gunning King, Victor Prout. Altogether for sheer varietv and value it is well up to. the standard set by this popular magaajne.. , The Temperature. — At three o'cloci? this morning the thermometer outside this office registered gf? degrees Big bargain chances belong to those who visit the great summer clearance sale now on at Mrs Anstice's. The prioes are cut to clear the goods, and they're doing it, and hundreds of appreciative buyers are already profiting by this great sale. Be advised and get in early. Every da.v makes a big difference in the selection.*
