SCURVY TREATMENT OF AN ENGLISH VISITOR.

One of the delegates to the recent Commerce Congress; Mr Thomas Wil- ' Ham Ward, of Sheffield, England had a rather unpleasant experience in Sydney. H-is correspondence by some misaclventuro was .handed over to a young man named George Lewis Ward, an engineer, who, on tho strength of a power of attorney and other matters contained in it, cabled to the firm of Thomas Ward, Ltd., i Sheffield, and obtained a remittance ! £50 through Renter's. Last week, at j the. Quarter Sessions, Mr. T. W. ' Ward, who was leaving for Home., and '. on that account opposed an, applicn- j t-ion made {or a postponement of 1-lIS j hearing of a charge of forgery laid j against G. L. Ward, complained bit- j terly that tho latter had wantonly j dt-stioyfcd--hi«' private. correspondenr;^, I even two ifottens referrihig to tho di ath , of ]iis mother, which had taken place j since he left England. After the jury had convicted the accused of forgery and uttering, Judge Hurray said all must very much regret that Mr Ward — the real Ward — had been treated in such a scurvy manner, not by tho people of Now South Wales, but ov this one offender. Quite apart from the matter of the £50, which would probably be a mere bagatelle to the firm, the fact of having his correspondence, which he valued so highly, so , disgracefully destroyed was doubtless I the worst offence. The foreman of tli? j jury said Mr. Ward had tho sympathy j of tho jury, as he was sure he had of the public. His Honour made an order for the ha.iiding over of n. Savings Bank deposit of £28 in the name of a young lady to whom tho ac- ■ c-used had given the money. Tho aceased was remanded for sentence.
