NELSON HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.

GENERAL MEETING. A general meeting of mombers of the Horticultural Society was heW in the Chamber of Commerce room last evening. The attendance was very disappointing.' The President (Mr W. Heaps) occupied the chair. The meeting was called with tho object of having a free disccussio:i upon society matters generally, and the best means of popularising and advancing the Society. . . It was decided to recommend to the annual general meeting that the number of the general committee be increased from seven to twelve, with a view of having at least four members of the committee in attendances at each show to assist in staging and act. as stewards. Messrs Hamilton, P. Bond, B. Tasker, Wigzell, and the secretary were appointed a sub-committee to consider the best means of increasing the membership, with power to act. Dr Wright said that if ten others would do tho same thing, he would present two guineas to the Society's funds. It was considered that the Society is committed to four shows in the year, and it was decided that tho bulb show should be held in mid September ; the rose show about tho third week in November; the sweet pea and carnation show early in January; and the autumn show about the end of April., The President, ' Messrs Hamilton and Tasker, were appointed a subcommittee to ascertain on what terms tho Chamber of Commerce would allow tho Society to place a table in the chambers room ftr literature, etc. Notice of motion Was given to move that the rule regarding the date of holding the annual meeting bo rescinded with' the view of closing the year at the end of May. and holding the annual meeting in June. It was resolved to hold a special mooting next week to consider the notice of motion. Messrs Merrick, Hamilton, Day and Bruce were appointed a subcommittee to draw up the schedule for tho bulb show. The suggestion to havo the schedules, for all shows embodied in book form at the beginning of the year was approved, and to enable this to bo dono was ono of the main reasons for tho notice of motion to alter tho date of the annual meeting. Some very choice blooms , were placed upon the table by a few of tho members. Mrs Merrick showed- half a dozen beautiful chrysanthemum blooms, . the pick of them being an enormous Richard Seddon. Tho other blooms were Mdm. Rosscnu, Maud Jeffries, Mrs Barkley, Duchess of Sutherland, and Guy Page. Mr W. H. Simpson showed blooms of Mrs Neville and Duchess of Sutherland chrysanthemums. ' .Dr Wright showed a collection of choice' bouvardias grown, out of doors, and some very fine named double violets (three varieties), Mdm. Millet, Marie Louise, and Mrs Hume Campbell. Mr A. Day exhibited some beautiful blooms of Pharisaer, a hybrid tea rose, evidently a free autumn bloomer.
