FIRE AT DRAPERY ESTABLISHMENT.

CONSIDERABLE DAMAGE DONE

Wellington, April 21. Shortly after two o'clock this after-

noon a fire -broke but in Messrs War-

nock and Adkin's large drapery establishment: on Lambton Quay. Some thirty girls, whp were working upstairs, got considerably excited arid frightened; They were all rescued by th© Government . ' Buildings mes-. senger -staff and the Fire Brigade. The Imilding was badly damaged by fire and water. The flames worp subdued, and the stock suffered severely from the deluge of water poured in by the City Fire Brigade. The building is ov/ned by Messrs, Hamilton, Gilirer, and A. Maguire, ,aud' •is insured in the Atlas Company for £15,500. The contents .are insured in all for £7200, distributed as ■ follows :— Ro3'al Exchange

£1500 ; Liverpool, London, and Globe 1 £1200: Norwich Union £500; Alliance ;• North British £500; Sun '£750; Royal £1500 ; London and Lancashire £250. The adjoining building, occupied by .Messrs Reynolds •Bros, is owned by -Mr Allan, and the stock'is insured in the Norwich office for £150. Both adjoining buildings suffered, and the contents suffered .some damage by smoke and water.
