RICHMOND HORTICULTURAL AND INDUSTRIAL EXHIBITION.

A SUCCESSFUL SHOW. ** • ■■ ..The Horticultural and Industrial exhibition held at the Oddfellows' Hall, Richmond, yesterday ' proved very successful, and the number of exhibits compared favourably with those received last year. ' There was'a very fins' display of pot plants, the foliage Begonias shown by Mr E. Wilkes and Miss Higgs being exceptionally good. There- were^very few entries for cut flower.B, the., season being too late for feses and rather early for chrysan-_ tbemums. In .the decorative class the entries were numerous and competition was keen: A feature of this class was the buttonholes. In compliance with the conditions these were shown on black velvet, which set off the„ flow ors very effectively. There ii»as an excellent display of fruit, the exhibits of apples, the. Stunner Pippin, Joh.'athan and Cox's Orange varieties, .being splendid. , Some very fine peaches were also' shown. There was a good show of vegetables, the onions grown by Miss T. Palmer attracting considerable ' attention. Six of them weighed. Blb. 6ozs. Domestic produce was a" strong class, and the exhibits, taken all round, were of a high order. In the industrial section some very fine fancy work was shown, which ap?pealed to the tastes of the ladies.' The class for school children attracted numerous entries, and some of the work was very good,- particularly the free-hand drawing of plants from nature. /The maps were also neatly drawn, and the writing was carefully done. A number of Fijian curios were exhibited by Mr W. E. Wilkes, and Mr W. Challies showed a bundle of walking sticks. Mr W. R. May also lia,d- an exhibit of seeds and vegetables .airanged by Mr G;,G. Wearing very effectively. : ■--■■•• -..•-" ■- The show was„opened in the afternoon by the Mayor of Richmond (Mr A. Sheat), and in; the -evening the Richmond Brass Band played selections.
