NEWS OF THE DAY.

There was a large attendance at ithe Loyal Nelson Lodge, 1.0. G.T., last evening, when Bro. Mear's presided. An old member of the Order was re-admitted. A special minute recognising the services of the late Bro. M. E. Jackson to tho Lodge, and the Order, was agreed to, and the secretary was instructed to record the same in the minute book. The new regalia for the officers was worn for the first time. It looked smart, and received favourable comment. Bro. Preen and the sub-committee -were specially thanked for their work in connection with the regalia. After theTecess the Lodge room was thrown open, and a pleasant time was spent in: harmony. A sister who is about to visit Queensland was asked to convey the fraternal greetings of -the Lodge"' to any lodges -she might visit in Australia. It was resolved to hold a Lodge of Instruction next week,- when the Lodge will be officered by the most, experienced officers. The following players from the Nelson Cricket Association will play at Motueka during Easter :—T. Louisson, F. Franklin (Nelson), L. Hesseltine, J. Martin (Athletic), B. Coleman, R. Hunter; G. Mill (Phoenix); W. Bremner, S. Rutherford, M. Giblin (Stoke), and M. O'Brien (Old Boys) ; scorer, V. Condell ,• umpire, E. Floyd. The matches to be played. will be as follows: April 9th, Motueka ; April 10th Pokort)ro 'April 12th, Riwaka._ Some time ago the British Army abandoned the use of pigeons for the purpose 'of sending war messages. It is believed that the Army was misled into supposing that such means of communication had become obsolete. An abandonment of this method, is foolish, says the "New Zealand Times," and it explains that during the Easter instructions of the troops at Oringi the Wellington Homing Club will allow the troops' the use of its pigeons, so that the movements of the army during the day 'may be sent speedily to headquarters at Wellington. -The idea appears to he that in the event of the troops being hard pressed- hy a powerful enemy, the pigeons would be faster -than telegrams and would thus ensure that supports and: reliefs be entrained from Wollington-to help the troops to stem the torrent of invaders whose existence is supposed. y The sub-committee of the Nelson Hospital and Charitable Aid Board appointed to consider the balance of tenders' for furnishings for the Old People's Home, havo accepted the following: — Water "proof sheeting; Everett Bros, j.wire. mattresses, single beds, Messrs -Page and Sons and E." Nalder and Co., Ltd. ; double beds, etc. , Messrs Strange and Co. , Christchurch ; double wire; mattresses; Messrs Strange and Co., Christcliurch; 72 pairs Finley sheeting, Messrs B. Tasker and Co. ; Roslyn blanke's for. double beds, Messrs B. Tasker and Co. ; short cross window .curtains, Messrs E. Buxton and' Co., Ltd. ; curtain rods, etc., Messrs. Fleming and Sons ; hearth - rugs,. Mossrs Fleming and Sons ; cupboards; Messrs E. : Nalder and Co.. Ltd. The acceptance of tenders for linoleums for the corridors was left to the chairman and Mr Bisley, and for quilts "to Mr Bisley. yBankruptcies sometimes prove an advantage to someone. Here is an instance. Recently a large wholesale house bankrupted, and their stock was put up to : tender by the Official" Assignee. Messrs Veitch and Allan tendered at nearly 10s in the pound off wholesale prices, and their tender was accepted. This firm are now offering the' whole of this stock at little more than it cost them, and it means that there are now obtainable bargainsin real, good serviceable house-? hold wear.
