Wellington, March 29. A cable from the High Commissiouei dated 27th inst., says: — ' „ The mutton market remains depressed, and has declined further. Canterbury mutton", which is in small supply, is quoted at 3Jd ; North Island in large supply, 2Jd ; River Plate mutton is in large supply, and is being strongly pushed at 2jd ; the supply exceeds the demand ,and stock is accumulating at present in store. The lamb market is weak and inactive, and there is very little prospect for improvement for: some time. Stocks on hand are heavy, and prices have declined. Current quotations are: — Canterbury lambs, 3|d; other than Canterbury, 4Jd; Australian, d|dj River Plate, 4fd. The beef market is I weak, owing to poor demand, me supply from River Plate is heavy. New Zealand hindquarters are quoted at 3d ; forequarters, 2Jd. , The butter market is rather unsettled 'and^uy ers are holding back, expecting prices to go' lower. The market is lifeless. Choicest New Zealand butter is quoted at 103s ; Australian, 101s; Argentine, 102s; Danish, 115s j Siberian, 101s. . . The cheese market is firm and thero is more demand, especially for coloured makes, which are quoted at Ms; white makes are quoted at 61s. The hemp market is very depressed, on account of large shipments from Manila. Current quotations are:-— Good fair grade, on spot, £23 ; ; fair grade on spot £21 ; fair current Manila, on spot, £23. ApnJ-J™? shipments : Good fair grade, £22 : 10b ; fan grade, £20 10s; fair current Manila, £20 10s. Last week's Manila output amounted-to 25,000 bales.
