NELSON PROVINCIAL SCOTTISH SOCIETY.

INAUGURAL INGLENEUK. The Nelson Provincial Scottish Society's first ".inglerieuk" of the season took place at the Druids' Hall last ovening, Chief Robert Allan presiding. Owing to the inclemency of the weather the attendance was not so large as anticipated. Ohief Allan, in his opening speech, outlined the programme of the season, and intimated that .the. next inglcneuk would be held to wards, the end of April, when there would be. an essay competition, the subject being the " .Life of Robert Louis Stevenson," for which .he would offer a prize of ono guinea. He announced that before the next ingleneuk Mrs Allan and himself would entertain members at a garden party at " Ronaki." Chief Allan also intimated that a dancing class would be again started this winter, if sufficient inducement offered, and that iv was the intention of the Society to form a singing class. The services of Mr G. F. Naylor as instructor, had been secured. Children of members, between the age of 12 and 15 years, ' could join free of charge, and to those between 15 and 18 years of age, a small fee would be charged. Chief Allan also said that he would offer two one guinea prizes, to be competed for at the end of two months by members of the class, one guinea for the best rendering of a Scotch song by a boy and girl respectively. The only condition was that competitors were to be members of the singing class. Chief Allan also announced that Mr Naylor had been appointed accompanist for the season. A programme of vocal and instrumental' items followed. The Misses Calder opened with a pianoforte duet, which was followed by a song by Miss Richards, " Oh, for the Bloom of my am Native Heather," she was compelled to respond to an encore. Mr Huttoii, -of Dunodin, who was in splendid voice, gave a fino rendering of. " Ye Bring to Me a Pint of Wine," giving as an encore, "The De'-U away to the Exciseman." . Mr Robert Barrowman followed with a concertina solo, and then Mr A. A. . Hintz - -gave Mel. B. Spurr's after dinner speech, which received a well merited encore. Mr H. Rudman's recitations were most enthusiastically received; and he was loudly encored. Miss Simpson gave a sympathetic rendering of ."My • am Folk," and Mr Hutton sang with fine effect "The Standard on the Braes of Mar," giving as an encore "The Skipper." The excellent, programme concluded with a song by Miss Richards, " In the Chimney Corner," and the singing of "Auld Lang Syne." ' Miss Wells was to have danced a Scotch reel, but thrpugh some misunderstanding tho musician did not. turn up to play the necessary music. -Altogether a very pleasant evening was spent, and the next "ingleneuk " is being looked forward to with much pleasure. The Chief announced before the close of the entertainment that- 21 new members had boen elected. .-".-.-
